Saving Lungs Behind the Chair Expands Houston Reach to Increase Lung Cancer Screening Awareness in Local Salons
Public health initiative partners with Houston salon professionals at major hair show at NRG Center; advance media availability open Saturday
Saving Lungs Behind the Chair is a public health initiative designed to bridge the gap in lung cancer screening awareness by building on the trusted relationships between salon professionals and their clients to reach at-risk populations.
This Sunday, the initiative will expand that effort at the Trailblazers & Trendsetters Hair Show and Beauty Expo, a major hair industry and consumer event at NRG Center, where Saving Lungs Behind the Chair will connect with additional salon professionals and provide them with the tools and information to bring lung cancer screening awareness back to their clients and communities.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
- Initiative: Saving Lungs Behind the Chair (SLBTC)
- Goal: Increase lung cancer screening awareness in Houston communities via salon professionals
- Key Partner: LAMIK Beauty
- Event: Trailblazers & Trendsetters Hair Show and Beauty Expo (Sept. 6, NRG Center)
- Impact: Nearly 40 clients engaged to date; 50 percent screening coverage via insurance/Medicare
“Clients do divulge to us, and they talk to us. Why not make meaningful conversation, life-saving conversation, conversation that can make a difference?” says Kim Roxie, founder of Houston-based LAMIK Beauty and key partner in the Saving Lungs Behind the Chair initiative.
The program is gaining steam in Houston: dozens of salon professionals have signed up, nearly 40 clients have learned about lung cancer screening, and about half will have their screenings covered by insurance or Medicare.
Saving Lungs Behind the Chair provides participating salon professionals with information on lung cancer risk and screening, preparing them to start conversations with clients who may be eligible and to connect them with screening resources.
